Timely investigation, appropriate referral and coordinated specialist care can help patients move more efficiently from clinical suspicion to diagnosis, treatment and ongoing support. Your role in the patient journey Recognise Remain alert to persistent, unexplained symptoms or blood count changes that may require further investigation. Communicate Provide patients and families with clear, compassionate information on diagnosis, treatment and next steps. Investigate Use appropriate clinical and laboratory assessments to explore suspected haematological disease. Coordinate Support continuity of care across primary care, pathology, specialist treatment, transplantation and psychosocial services. Refer Facilitate timely referral to haematology, oncology or appropriate specialist care. Advocate Help patients navigate practical, financial and geographical barriers to specialist care, treatment and support. Awareness informs, and clinical action gives hope. For some patients, the next step depends on finding the right match. Not every patient diagnosed with leukaemia will require a blood stem cell transplant. However, when transplantation forms part of the specialist treatment plan, identifying a suitable donor becomes an important part of the patient's treatment journey. 30% Around 30% of patients who require a stem cell transplant find a matching donor within their family. For many other patients, the search must extend to unrelated potential donors registered locally and internationally. The approximately 30% family-match figure is reflected in South African government and DKMS Africa awareness information.
