Lenacapavir Launch Signals a New Era in South Africas HIV Prevention Fight

South Africa is preparing for a major shift in HIV prevention as President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to launch the national rollout of Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable HIV-prevention medicine that provides six months of protection per dose and is administered only twice a year. The launch, scheduled for Friday at Lilian Ngoyi Stadium in Secunda, Mpumalanga, is being positioned by the Presidency as a milestone in the country's ongoing effort to prevent new HIV infections and move closer to ending HIV as a public-health threat. Unlike daily prevention pills or more frequent injections, Lenacapavir could make HIV prevention easier for people who struggle with daily medication, clinic access, stigma or adherence fatigue. The rollout also reflects collaboration between government, civil society, the private sector, development partners and donors, including the Global Fund, with Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu, provincial health leaders and SANAC civil society representatives expected to attend the launch. For South Africa, which continues to carry one of the world's largest HIV burdens, Lenacapavir is more than a new medicine - it represents a practical step toward prevention that fits real lives, reduces the pressure of daily pill-taking, and offers renewed hope that HIV prevention can become simpler, more discreet and more accessible.
