Gauteng’s public healthcare system is moving to fill more than 1 200 clinical positions as hospitals continue to face nursing shortages caused in part by earlier budget constraints. The Gauteng Department of Health says a previous moratorium on filling vacant clinical posts has now been lifted, allowing hospitals to begin recruiting staff needed to strengthen services across the province. According to Gauteng Health spokesperson Steve Mabona, the vacancies are at different stages of the recruitment process, including advertising, shortlisting and interviews. More than 1 000 positions have already reached the shortlisting stage, as the department works to place additional healthcare professionals in facilities facing staffing pressure. Specialist nursing remains one of the most significant challenges. Shortages have been reported in critical areas including intensive care units, operating theatres and mental health services, where experienced nurses require additional specialist training. The department has also renewed contracts for some retired specialist nurses in an effort to stabilise services while permanent recruitment and training continue. Gauteng Health is working with nursing colleges to increase the number of professionals receiving specialist training. Current provincial vacancies include posts in critical care, theatre nursing, midwifery and neonatal nursing, highlighting the need for skilled professionals capable of working in highly specialised hospital environments. Staff shortages are being felt alongside heavy patient demand, particularly at facilities dealing with large numbers of trauma and emergency cases. Health officials have acknowledged that high trauma volumes can place additional pressure on staff and operating theatres, sometimes resulting in elective procedures being postponed to make capacity available for urgent cases. The recruitment drive comes as Gauteng’s public hospitals continue to serve one of the country’s largest and most densely populated patient populations. Filling vacant nursing positions, retaining experienced specialists and expanding training will be central to the province’s efforts to reduce pressure on existing staff and maintain access to essential hospital services.
