The Free State Department of Health has opened a new Paediatric Cardiology Catheterisation Laboratory at Universitas Academic Hospital, expanding access to advanced, minimally invasive heart care for children in the province and neighbouring areas. The state-of-the-art, digitally enabled facility is designed to diagnose and treat children with heart conditions without always requiring open-heart surgery, reducing the need for families to travel long distances for specialist care and easing pressure on larger referral centres. According to SAnews, the laboratory will serve young patients from the Free State and surrounding provinces, making it a major step forward for child-focused healthcare access in central South Africa. For families, this means earlier diagnosis, faster intervention and more specialised care closer to home; for the health system, it strengthens paediatric cardiac services and supports better outcomes for children born with or living with heart disease. More than a new hospital unit, the facility represents a promise that children's healthcare should not depend on geography, income or distance from major medical centres, but on a system that brings high-quality treatment within reach.
