A new study suggests that beetroot juice, a natural source of dietary nitrates, can enhance endurance and vascular health in adults over 60. Researchers found that participants who consumed nitrate rich beetroot juice improved their exercise capacity, experienced less fatigue and performed activities more efficiently than those given placebo drinks. Nitrates are converted in the body into nitric oxide, which widens blood vessels, improves blood flow and reduces the workload on the heart - effects that are particularly valuable as arteries stiffen with age.Participants also showed measurable gains in walking and cycling endurance, along with better performance in short burst activities. While beetroot juice is not a replacement for regular exercise, the findings suggest it may act as a useful nutritional aid to support cardiovascular function and make physical activity more comfortable for older adults. Researchers note that ongoing studies will help determine the best dosing strategies and long-term safety as interest in nitrate rich foods continues to grow.
