High HDL Cholesterol Linked to Increased Glaucoma Risk
A recent publication in the British Journal of Ophthalmology suggests that older adults with excessively high levels of "good" HDL cholesterol may face a greater risk of developing glaucoma. In contrast, researchers found that individuals with elevated levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol appeared to have a lower risk of the condition.
Glaucoma, often called the "silent thief of sight," is a progressive eye disease that affects the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and, in severe cases, blindness. With no known cure, early detection is crucial, yet the disease often presents no symptoms in its initial stages.
Several factors contribute to glaucoma risk, including genetics, age, ethnicity, and underlying health conditions such as diabetes, migraines, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. This new research adds cholesterol levels to the list of potential risk factors, offering new insights into the complex nature of glaucoma.
