Surge in Vaping Among Non-Smokers in England Raises Concerns
Scientists estimate that one million adults in England have started vaping despite never having been regular smokers, a sharp rise compared to 2020. The surge has been largely attributed to the availability of disposable vapes since 2021 and is most prevalent among young adults. Approximately one in seven 18-24-year-olds who have never been regular smokers now use e-cigarettes.
While vaping is considered less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes, the trend is raising concerns among health experts. Lead researcher Dr. Sarah Jackson of University College London (UCL) noted that for some individuals, vaping might be a healthier alternative to smoking. However, for those who would not have smoked in the first place, regular vaping over time could pose greater risks than not vaping at all.
The rise in vaping, particularly among non-smokers, is prompting debate about the long-term health impacts of e-cigarette use in younger populations.
